FightGearLab Methodology
How we evaluate and compare boxing gear across brands.
Our Goal
FightGearLab is designed to create clear, structured comparisons across boxing gear. Our scoring system focuses on practical training performance rather than marketing claims.
What Our Scores Mean
Scores represent comparative editorial evaluations based on training feedback, product construction, and research. They are not laboratory measurements or guarantees.
Testing & Research
Some gear is personally tested while other products are evaluated through trusted feedback, community discussion, and analysis of available information.
The Scoring Framework
Wrist Support
Evaluates structural stability during impact, including closure systems, cuff construction, and internal reinforcement.
Knuckle Protection
Assesses padding quality and impact absorption relative to the product's intended training purpose.
Padding Density
Described qualitatively as Soft, Medium, or Firm depending on material construction and training purpose.
Durability
Based on material quality, stitching construction, and expected performance under consistent training conditions.
Value
Evaluates performance relative to price within the same category and tier.
The Editor Score
The Editor Score is the arithmetic mean of the four performance metrics above (wrist support, knuckle protection, durability, and value), each scored 1–10. It is stored and shown to two decimal places (for example, 7.75), not rounded to a whole number. Most well-built training equipment falls between 7.0 and 9.5.
Scores are comparative evaluations designed to help fighters understand relative strengths between products rather than absolute performance guarantees.
How Products Are Evaluated
- Direct hands-on testing when available
- Feedback from fighters and coaches
- Gym discussions and real training experience
- Long-form video reviews and analysis
- Written gear reviews and expert blogs
- Manufacturer specifications
- Comparative analysis within the same price tier
- AI-assisted research tools to summarize available information
When a product has been tested directly through FightGearLab or trusted training partners, it may be marked with the FGL Tested tag.
Evaluation Scope & Limitations
FightGearLab is an independent enthusiast project. Not every product listed has been physically tested by the team.
Evaluations combine hands-on experience, community feedback, and structured research. Individual sources are not always cited for each score because conclusions are drawn from multiple references and training discussions.
Affiliate Disclosure
FightGearLab may earn commissions from purchases made through affiliate links. These commissions do not influence editorial scores or product rankings.
Important Notes
Product performance may vary depending on usage conditions, training intensity, break-in period, and manufacturing variation. Handmade equipment may differ slightly between units.
All information provided on this site represents editorial opinion intended to help fighters make informed decisions. It is not a guarantee of performance or safety.
Product Safety and Regulatory Notices
Some products reviewed on FightGearLab may carry regulatory warnings such as California Proposition 65 notices on retailer websites. These warnings are required by law for products sold in California that contain certain chemicals. FightGearLab is a review and comparison platform and does not sell products directly. For specific safety information, warnings, and regulatory details, always refer to the official retailer or manufacturer product page before purchasing.
Our Objective
FightGearLab aims to organize real-world gear discussions into a clear comparison system that helps fighters navigate equipment choices more confidently.
